See Mr. Belding at a baseball game near you

When you’re a male star of “Saved by the Bell,” the popular TV show that launched the careers of several teen idols, you have to expect that females will occasionally swoon in your presence. But can Mario Lopez and Mark-Paul Gosselaar claim that a woman actually fainted upon meeting them?

Well, Dennis Haskins -- known worldwide as Mr. Belding -- can.

The goofy, wise and endearing principal of Bayside High, Haskins says he and his co-stars were at Disney World doing promotions during the show’s heyday in the early ‘90s when he inadvertently caused a woman to lose consciousness.

“I got lost while looking for where to be, so I tapped this woman on the shoulder and said, ‘Excuse me, do you know where the ‘Saved by the Bell’ exhibit is?' And out she went,” recalls Haskins, 61, who played Mr. Belding from 1989 until 2000 in the original “Saved by the Bell” series as well as two spinoffs, “Saved by the Bell: The College Years” and “Saved by the Bell: The New Class.”

For the record, the woman recovered from her unexpected run-in with Mr. Belding. But Haskins, whom you might have recognized in a recent cameo on “Mad Men,” is still surprising “Saved by the Bell” fans more than two decades after the show’s premiere.

For the fourth consecutive year he is making appearances at minor league baseball parks, where he’ll typically meet the players, throw out the first pitch, sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” sign autographs and drop into the radio booth for an inning of play-by-play. He calls it “Mr. Belding’s Boys of Summer Tour.”

“All the minor league ballparks are geared toward family, bringing your children out, having a good, clean time, and that’s what ‘Saved by the Bell’ was all about,” he said.

Haskins is synonymous with Mr. Belding, but he’s had other recognizable roles as well, including a guest spot on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” in 2005 and the cameo on “Mad Men” in which he played a Cool Whip test-kitchen scientist. For fans of “Saved by the Bell,” Haskins’ unexpected appearance on the AMC hit was rather nostalgic, and "Mr. Belding" was soon trending on Twitter.

“That was spontaneous and really delightful,” Haskins said. “To have that kind of reaction come back was really enjoyable.”

Though his best-known character is somewhat klutzy, Haskins was an athlete growing up in Tennessee and remains a big sports fan. He walked on the freshman basketball team at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and has come to know many athletes during his years doing celebrity appearances.

Among his favorite interests is professional wrestling.

“I just have a lot of respect for how they maintain their athleticism and how hard they work and the show they put on for the fans,” said Haskins, who recently dropped by a WWE event in Chattanooga while visiting family.

“Saved by the Bell” has enjoyed a renaissance lately, with episodes airing on MTV2 and Netflix, and Haskins still keeps in touch with some of his old castmates.

“I stay in touch with Mario more than anybody, and Elizabeth [Berkley] a little bit,” he said. “But the others are off with careers, lives, other things.”

For Dustin Diamond, aka Screech, “other things” have involved celebrity boxing matches and roles in adult movies. If Mr. Belding were asked about this, he might have some harsh words for Screech. But Haskins reserves judgment.

“I worked with Dustin from the day he was 11 until he was 20,” Haskins said. “We worked together a long time. Dustin is making his own choices for his own reasons, but I’m not going to criticize him.”

Haskins can be seen at minor league stadiums throughout the summer, but when can we expect to see him on screen again?

“You don’t know as an actor,” he said. “Your last job is your last job until you get the next one."

Tiffani Thiessen Celebrates at Mattel's Little Mommy Day Event

Tiffani Thiessen celebrated the joys of mini-motherhood milestones with her daughter, Harper at Mattel’s Little Mommy Day at Dylan’s Candy Bar in New York City on April 26. The Little Mommy brand had a great time sharing the new dolls and accessories with a room full of moms and “little mommies” along with event host, Rosie Pope of Bravo’s “Pregnant in Heels” and other celebrity moms, including Kelly Rutherford.

Girls had the opportunity to adopt their very own Little Mommy baby doll and play out unforgettable mommy milestones in three lovable, imaginative play activities including feeding, bathing and sleepy time.

This looked like such a fun event!

Looking for Complete Collection DVD Reviewers!

A few weeks ago, we shared that a new Complete Collection DVD was available on pre-order at the Canadian and UK Amazon branches, thanks to TV Shows On DVD. Not much information about the collection was listed in the description of the product. Well, it's finally out and available for purchase. We know a little more. The set includes Seasons 1-5, including both TV movies, Hawaiian Style and Wedding in Las Vegas.  It's marked as a 13-disc set. We still don't know if the set will ever be available in the US. Or if it has any special features or non-syndicated cut episodes. But something tells me it's only a matter of time before it will be released in the US.

In the meantime, I am looking for the folks who finally own it to help me answer a few questions, provide some screen shots of the menus and possibly write a review for the blog! If you think you can help me, please shoot me an email sbtbnow@aol.com Thanks!

BELL Coming to MTV2!

As many of you know, TBS dropped BELL from their lineup this month. Currently, SBTB is not airing in syndication on any US network for the first time in 20 years! But things have quickly changed.

Beginning in March, "Saved by the Bell" will be back in syndication, where it belongs, on MTV2! The network plans to air the show weekdays at 12-2PM and Saturday mornings beginning at 9-12PM! BELL is back on Saturday mornings!

Some people wonder why fans care so much to have BELL airing in syndication when all seasons are on DVD, even the TV movies. Our mission and passion is to continue the show's tradition on TV. We want new generations of kids to fall in love with the show. The only way is by having the show in syndication. We can't take for granted the success the show has gotten in syndication for 20 years! And for that we have to thank TBS. But I guess it's time for a change.

The kids of Bayside will be on MTV! "Lisa Turtle" would be honored.....one step closer to meeting MC HAMMER!!!!

Saved by the Bell Detention Desserts Table

From the Hostess With the Mostess Blog:

"So………I’m LIKE, totally so excited to share this RAD dessert table with you! *wink* All pun aside though, this Saved by the Bell inspired Bayside High School “Detention Desserts” Table from Million Dollar $mile Celebrations really IS pretty dang awesome!

Gotta love a clever & creative theme, and from Kelly “Kup”owski cupcakes to Screech on a Stick marshmallow pops, this one definitely fits the bill “bell“. Don’t miss the strategically placed AC Slater dumbbell, sneaker sugar cookies, or $15 retro television “cupcake stand” either! P.S. Apparently the candy push pops are “so excited” too… and I’m pretty stoked on how they’re displayed in textbooks! See below ;)"

We happen to think this party is so creative, and unique and did the show justice in a FUN party way! Great job! What do you all think? For more pictures, click here!

SBTB 13-Disk Complete Collection DVD Set Coming Soon?

TV Shows On DVD.com is reporting Saved by the Bell - A DVD Release for 'The Complete Collection' is Coming. A 13-disc set is up for pre-order at Amazon's Canadian branch.

"From 2003 to 2005, Lionsgate released 3 DVD sets which together contained all 5 seasons of Saved by the Bell, the original show starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Mario Lopez, Dustin Diamond, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, Elizabeth Berkley, Lark Voorhies and Dennis Haskins. This unfortunately did NOT include the one season of the original show, Good Morning, Miss Bliss, which later became Saved by the Bell (and is counted as part of that show by many fans)...those home video rights lay elsewhere. However, in 2007 Lionsgate also released a "double feature" DVD of the two post-series reunion telefilms: "Hawaiian Style / Wedding In Las Vegas." All 4 titles were available in both the USA and Canada.

Now we're grateful to one of our longtime readers, Alexander Ricci, for the heads up that a new listing at Amazon.ca (the Canadian branch of the big e-tailer) shows a March 12 release date for "Saved by the Bell - The Complete Collection." It's marked there as a 13-disc set, which is just enough DVDs to cover the disc count of the 4 previous releases (5 discs + 4 discs + 3 discs + 1 disc = 13). Cost shown is CA$61.99 SRP, and you can pre-order it now at a discount that brings it down into the same current price range of the old separate titles.

There's no package art shown there yet. The state-side branch of Amazon doesn't show a listing for the title at this time, and the Canadian listing neglects to name a studio or distributor. Assuming it's still Lionsgate, the studio hasn't made any formal announcement for the product yet. And the date shown in Amazon.ca's pre-order listing is a Monday; we all know that in-store DVD sets come out on Tuesdays. So we do expect the date to change when the title is officially announced (our guess is that Amazon accidentally used the "order due" date, which is the deadline day roughly 30 days prior to the street date in which retailers must submit their finalized product orders to studios/distributors in order for deliveries to arrive on time).

Stay tuned, of course, and we'll update you further on this title just as soon as we are able to!"

Now this has us asking:
Will this set include:

  • Full non-syndicated edited episodes?
  • interviews?
  • Good Morning, Miss Bliss eps?
  • special features?
  • etc.
  • Will it be sold in the US, too?

Will YOU buy this set? Let us know in the comment section! Don't forget to share this post with your friends on Facebook and Twitter!
